According to the Recycling Council of Ontario, the average Canadian discards 81 pounds of textiles annually. That’s waste not just in terms of the landfill but also because textiles are incredibly resource intensive and one of the country’s largest polluters.

Consider biodegradable, and renewable natural fibres that require minimal chemical fertilizers like organic cotton, linen, hemp, sheepskin and wool. In fact, wool may be a standout option. According to 2020 study published in Sustainability by Australian Wool Innovation-funded scientists, wool requires less washing compared to clothes made from synthetics, cotton and cellulose fibres.

Think it’s scratchy and irritating? Cashmere, made from goat fibre, is soft and breathable. Hand washing or machine washing in cold water on delicate cycle will help preserve wool. To reduce your carbon footprint even further, choose high quality, investment pieces that will last for decades.
