Psychologist Dr Rebekah Wanic, recommends listening to birds singing, waterfalls or running streams in the morning for the best mental health impact. The reason?
“Rainfall and ocean waves are very rhythmic and consistent, offering a soothing pattern that is predictable,” says Wanic. And, birdsong has been shown to positively impact anxiety, depression, and general wellbeing.
If you’re landlocked or live in an apartment, don’t despair, there are other soothing sounds, like thunderstorms. “The booming sounds that punctuate the rainfall…may provide a sense of comfort, in that, hearing them from a safe place can help you feel protected and secure.”
Also, the ambient sound of a crackling fire “offer[s] repetition in sound frequency that can be comforting.” Even if you have none of these sounds readily available in real life, listen to them online for the same benefits.
