Decoded: 7 Beauty Looks from the Fall 2018 Runways

Runways this seasons were full of colour, texture and tone. Francelle Daly using NARS Cosmetics described the look at Phillip Lim, but it may well just be the perfect look for fall: “this season[‘s girl] is a free-spirited nomad.”

Runways this seasons were full of colour, texture and tone. Francelle Daly using NARS Cosmetics described the look at Phillip Lim, but it may well just be the perfect look for fall: “this season[‘s girl] is a free-spirited nomad.”

1/ Bold Brows Will change your life
Brooke Shields à la 1980s Calvin Klein commercial, Taylor Hill at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s – what do they all have in common? Full natural brows. Getting the look means remembering one thing – resist the urge to pluck. We repeat, resist the urge to pluck. Allow your brows to grow in a little – lightly groomed eyebrows standout with tweezing that enhances their natural curve. All you need to measure are 3 points – the start, end and arch. To determine the shape that flatters you, hold a pencil vertically against the outer side of your nose – the spot where the tip of the pencil means your brows makers the start point for your brow. To find the end point, tilt the pencil until the tip meets the outer corner of your eye. Take your pencil and line up the outside edge of your iris with the bottom edge of your brow – that marks the highest point of your arch. Now that you have the key points, keep an eighth of an inch (0.3 cm) thickness. Tweeze hairs that fall outside this curve. Then take a brow pencil using a feathering motion to define the shape.

2/ The Instant Glam formula for fall
Cream blush plus cream lipstick in rosy tones, for an all round glow.

3/ Dewy Skin
Found! A new oil from Colombia made from the nuts of the cacay fruit boasting vitamin E, linoleic acid (omega 6) and retinol (for anti-aging). Thick and viscous with the pleasant, faint scent of roasted peanuts, this oil absorbed quickly into skin leaving it feeling supple.

4/ Golden Girl Eyes
Yellow leaves are a sure sign of fall and runways took notice. Eyes mirrored leaves with a bright pop of yellow-gold eyeshadow or glittery liner, making them look brighter and instantly glam. If you’re fair choose a buttery yellow shadow; canary or butterscotch look great on dark complexions. For long lasting wear make sure you prime lids, then use a soft-tipped pencil or small brush to apply colour along the bottom lash line or the inner corner of eyes. For the glitter liner use a brush with setting spray to affix on the lid. Just keep it subtle. So easy it feels like cheating!

Get the Look: Too Faced Glitter POP! Peel-Off Eyeliner, $24. Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream, $29. Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow, $36 (USD).

5/ Earth Tone Nails
Phillip Lim opted to bring to life a gypsy-esque look, taking onlookers on a nomadic journey. The nail look by Jin Soon Choi for JINsoon included smoky earth tones to complement the mixed Roman prints for the collection inspired by 80’s Versace. Nail colours ran the gamut from pastels to dark blues and black.

Get the Look: JINsoon x Goop in Dulcet. Marc Jacobs Beauty Fashion Collection Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Polish in Trax, $22. OPI in Olive for green. Essie anchor down, $9.

6/ Modern Braids
No Pippi Longstocking here! Today’s braids fit an athletic lifestyle – hair is pulled away from the face so you can focus on yoga, snowboarding or spin class. Braids come in two versions: carefree and intricate. For the carefree look simply create a centre part and braid hair on each side. Bright hair colour, loose wispy ends and accessories keep it modern. For the intricate version section hair into 3 segments and begin braiding in an overhand style along the front hairline to above the ear through the ends and secure with an elastic. When both sides are complete, separate the back into 3 sections and create classic braids. Once complete, fold the braids and secure to the back of the head. Next, pin the side section braids around the perimeter of the hairline and around the shape on the back of the head.

7/ Kissable Garnet Lips
“The inspiration for this season’s beauty look is the combination of memories I have of my mother wearing a saturated red lip, mixed with the poise of 1930s and 40s aristocracy. The colors are bold yet demure, which worked perfectly for these looks,” —says Erdem Moralioglu, designer for Erdem. Makeup artist Val Garland used lip powder to achieve the stain look. As some lip powder can be dry, apply lip balm first, then use a brush to fill in colour. This ensures you get the look but keep your lips moisturized. Or, use a creamy lip stain instead.
