Background
A city hotel with a loyal and dedicated staff is nothing new. Fortunately, the well-situated 254-room Delta Hotels Saint John, belongs to a special category of East Coast hospitality. Many staff have been here for decades, and it’s their friendliness, helpful attitude and pride that have infused the unprepossessing Brunswick Square shopping complex location with welcoming warmth.

Location
While Saint John is largely an industrial port city, it has an interesting past – rebuilt in the late 19th century after a devastating fire, it’s home to one of the largest collections of brick and stone Victorian buildings in Atlantic Canada. In other words, it’s an open-air gallery and a photographer’s dream. Architects, some hailing from Boston, reimagined and fireproofed the cityscape, so you’ll discover street upon street of gorgeous Romanesque Revival, Second Empire and characterful row house buildings (that look a lot like San Francisco or New Orleans).
Even from your bedroom window, you’ll appreciate the plethora of spires, columns and brownstones strewn throughout Uptown Saint John. Or, better yet, get up-close and explore the Saint John City Market (the oldest in Canada), King’s Square and Ihtoli-maqahamok – The Gathering Space, just steps away.
Across the street, the multi-year Fundy Quay project has kick-started investments with the promise of revitalizing the waterfront and increasing tourism. Luckily the hotel, which is connected to the Saint John Trade & Convention Centre, is in a great spot to benefit.

Room
Part of a large tower with commercial and retail space, the higher up you go, the better the views – all the way to the bustling cruise ship dock and Bay of Fundy. The pet-friendly rooms make picture windows part of the décor.
Guests
Most days, the hotel is very busy with a variety of conferences, tour groups from the US and a smattering of leisure travellers. Still, you’ll have the indoor swimming pool and fitness centre to yourself. If you’ve come on a road trip, parking can be a little confusing at first, on weekdays especially, but the staff will help you get the hang of it.
Dining
Mix Resto/Bar serves food with a focus on East Coast flair. Nice service from Max accompanied dinner. A lamb shank roasted in jus on a bed of sweet potato mash and fried onions pairs well with an Old-Fashioned cocktail. For dessert don’t miss the lava cake. If you’re peckish in the afternoon, there are cookies in the lobby.
The Details
Lowdown The staff are the soul of this hotel, Tara and Robert at the front desk are friendly and helpful. Tanya LeBlanc greets us at breakfast with sweet familiarity and we get chatting. Later, when we meet again at the hotel, she’s full of compliments, gifts and kindness. A treasured connection, the sort of enchantment that happens here.
