It’s so easy to grab your phone for anything and everything. Usually the impulse comes with a rationalization (“I’m bored”, “just going to quickly look this up,” “need to send this text”).
Make it more troublesome to grab your phone, according to venture capitalist Sahil Bloom, who stopped his phone dependency in three easy steps. Here’s how to stop without getting rid of your phone entirely.
One: Greyscale
Use greyscale mode to make the screen less attention-grabbing and colourful.
Too Much Screens? Pose For Balance
RIGHT ANGLE Take a large step backward with the right leg and turn the heel so the back foot is diagonal (a forty-five-degree angle) compared to the front foot. Alternatively, rest the back foot on the ground for more support. Inhaling, lengthen through the left arm, extending the fingers past the knee. Exhaling, reach the left palm down to the ground on the inside of your left foot. Reach your right arm up toward the sky. Repeat on other side.
WHY? Balance screen time with movement. A simple pose like the above is easy enough to do anywhere.
Two: No-Zone
Assign certain rooms within your home where phones are not allowed. For example, the kitchen, basement or bedroom is off-limits. Or, place a basket near the front door for leaving your phone as soon as you enter.
Three: Reset
Choose one day a week when you do not even turn on your phone.
