The Best Things Eat, Visit, Sip and Taste

Asador Bedua | Zumaia
Marian and José Marí Iriondo welcome guests to their asador, or grill house, serving excellent, typical Basque cuisine. Set in a charming stone farmhouse adjacent to the Urola river, seafood and meat cooked over open flame is the specialty here as well as hand-picked produce from their garden.
The site itself originated as a medieval market hall. In the 1940s merchants arrived by boat just to get a bite of the family’s famous omelettes. Since then the menu and offerings have expanded. The food here is exceptional.

Hiruzta Bodega | Hondarribia
With views of the Jaizkibel mountains, and just 3.1 kilometers from the Cantabrian Sea, guests can take in the pleasantly mild Atlantic climate at this internationally award-winning winery.
Spread over 17 sloped hectares of high-altitude vineyards, take a tour and then enjoy tasting and bites (boquerones, squid croquettes, cheese boards) at the taberna where umbrella-covered oak barrels play double duty as tables. Begin with the txakoli, a classic white wine with slight effervescence and clean freshness. Next, aged on lees, Hirtuzta Berezia is a modern style, with intense citrus, apple and tropical notes and good body. Basque Brut and Hiruzta rosé are both beautiful sparkling styles using the méthode traditionnelle, while Hiruzta Tinto is an atypical red txakoli made from the Hondarrabi Beltza grape.

Bodega K5 | Aia
Renown Basque chef Karlos Arguiñano’s txakoli wine is made from Hondarrabi Zuri grapes planted over 30 hectares. The highly awarded wine, known for long-lees aging, boasts pride of place on many of the top restaurants in the area.
Enjoy a tasting (accompanied by local anchovies, cheese and bread), led by effervescent and knowledgeable daughter, Amaia.
At 300 metres above sea level, the gorgeous modern tasting room overlooks the steep vineyards, first planted in 2005, the perfect backdrop to enjoy the mineral, fresh wines including structured Kaiaren, a long-lees aged premium style, K5, the signature txakoli, which spends 11 months aging on lees delivering complexity and structure and K Pilota, a younger style with only 5 months on lees. All are exceptional expressions of the grape.
