Location

It’s hard to overestimate the sheer power of the Bay of Fundy. At regular intervals, the ochre mud of the Petitcodiac River ripples with waves from the Bay’s incoming tide.

And, right where the river bends, in downtown Moncton, the Château Moncton hotel emerges beside the Riverfront pathway, the ideal place to witness the tidal bore phenomenon.

The hotel has an enviable spot on main street hugging one side of the riverbank with the Mill Creek Nature Park, wetlands and marshlands beyond. While there’s a grocery store, gas station, shopping complex and plenty of restaurants nearby, there’s just the right amount of nature to soften the urban landscape and make you relax.

Background

Part of Trademark Collection by Wyndham and with sister Château properties in Bedford, Saint John and Fredericton (under the same ownership), the red turret roof and pink and white faux-brick exterior are hard to miss. While it was built in 1999, the hotel has an understated, updated chic feel.

Room

It’s the river view suites you’ll want to book. Drift from the living room brightened up with historic photos of the city’s past through the curtained hallway with large windows. Linger in the soaker tub, or take your time to do your makeup or shave comfortably in the extra-large bathroom’s dedicated sitting area. From your bed, you’ll wake up to misty sunrises and watch as the water changes from blue to red over the course of a day.

Each of the suites is named after a famous castle around the world, including the Louvre, Himeji and Buckingham. The 69 traditional rooms, 18 upgraded king rooms, and 16 luxury suites all feature the same style, a medley of monochrome greys, white and the occasional black furnishings. Breakfast features some leftover service elements from the pandemic. Still, there’s the opportunity to sit outside on the patio, soaking up the river views, coffee in hand.

Guests

Moncton was the first bilingual city in Canada and you’ll find guests speaking both official languages with the front desk staff. Most guests hail from Canada, in for a few nights’ tour of the province, for business or to catch up with friends.

The Details

Vibe Given its easy access to the airport, most of the city’s highlights and nature parks, the hotel draws a low-key crowd, many of whom are repeat guests. Stroll into the lounge to pick up a coffee at any time or sit on the patio overlooking the river during the season.
