Crossroads: Extraordinary Recipes from the Restaurant That Is Reinventing Vegan Cuisine by Tal Ronnen (Artisan, $23.37). This is sexy vegan food from a practicing vegan chef presented in a modern style. Apart from a few recipes with fava beans, lentils and hummus, however, the book contains few plant-based protein sources and, as a result, reads like a collection of side dishes rather than substantial meals. While the names of many recipes from “béarnaise,”and “hearts of palm calamari,” to “vegetable bouillabaisse rouille” reference meat-based dishes to give hesitant readers a sense of the familiar, Ronnen misses the opportunity to create a truly innovative vegan culinary lexicon. Still, regardless of diet, everyone will get ideas from this book.
