CSL’s Q&A with celebrity event designer Edward Perotti about how entertaining at home can foster deep connection:

What’s the difference between hospitality and entertaining?

I appreciate this question, even if it might spark some debate among my peers. When you talk about “entertaining,” the focus is on you and your event. Hospitality, though, is about your guests and what they need.

What are some mental health benefits to entertaining?

I’m not a doctor or therapist, but from my experience, hosting private events can help mental health. It brings people together, eases stress and anxiety, and helps fight loneliness.

Sharing good times, laughter, food, and stories—whether in person or online—creates a real sense of belonging and support. These gatherings give everyone a safe place to express themselves and find emotional support, which helps both guests and hosts feel better and more resilient.

Perotti’s Entertaining Tips

MOOD Stay present and relaxed. When you’re calm and prepared, you set a good mood and help your guests feel comfortable.

SMILE Welcome your guests with a smile, take their coats, offer them a drink right away, and help them meet others so they can connect.

PRE-PLAN Think ahead about things like food allergies, non-alcoholic drink options, or guests who might not get along.

MEET & GREET Help guests get to know each other by making introductions and pointing out things they have in common.

CONNECT Ultimately, guests value feeling welcome and forming connections more than a spotless home or elaborate menu.

Is creating a tablescape more than just aesthetics?

Creating a tablescape goes beyond aesthetics. It involves crafting an immersive experience, telling a story, and demonstrating hospitality by thoughtfully layering decor to set the mood, reflect a theme, engage the senses, and make guests feel welcome. This approach transforms a simple meal into a memorable event and blends creativity with functionality, showcasing the host’s style and attention to detail.

People can sometimes be intimidated by entertaining, what are some key tips to making it joyful?

First, relax. Hosting is about sharing your authentic self with your guests. Avoid creating an experience that does not reflect who you are. Consider what a formal dinner or BBQ means to you, your company, or your charity’s culture. Do not simply copy what you see in magazines or on TV. Your home, fundraiser, or corporate event should reflect your unique style, personality, and culture.

Your guests will likely feel more comfortable if they sense your genuine personality. Enjoy the process and look for opportunities to include a small surprise or an engaging conversation starter. The only rule to follow is to ask yourself, “Would I enjoy being at this event?”

What’s the single most important thing a host should do when entertaining?

A host’s main job is to make sure guests feel comfortable, noticed, and welcome. Pay attention to your guests’ experience instead of worrying about making everything perfect.
