Jean-Michel Gathy, renowned for his visionary contributions to luxury hospitality design, has once again raised the bar with his latest project, Cheval Blanc Seychelles opening on 1st December 2024. His partnership with LVMH marks a new milestone with the launch of this villa-only resort: another jewel in the Cheval Blanc portfolio.
Leveraging his acclaimed work at Cheval Blanc Randheli in the Maldives, Gathy’s latest creation at Cheval Blanc Seychelles blends tropical naturalism with modernist precision, while staying true to his design narrative. Inspired by Creole living principles and local architecture, Gathy has created an architectural dialogue that harmonises luxurious interior spaces with the breathtaking Seychelles landscape. Arranged along the pristine Anse Intendance beach of Mahé Island, the resort’s villas seamlessly blend into the natural environment.
With 52 villas, Cheval Blanc Seychelles offers mesmerizing panoramas of the Indian Ocean, with 24 elegant villas set on the immaculate beaches and 28 ensconced in the lush hills, effortlessly harmonizing with Seychelles’ natural beauty. Ranging from 220m² to 620m², each villa features a private 12.5-meter swimming pool, creating an idyllic setting for couples, families, or groups of friends to relish a remarkable holiday experience.

Casual-Chic Atmosphere Creates a Seamless Elegance
Jean-Michel Gathy’s design philosophy at Cheval Blanc Seychelles brings a distinctive casual-chic atmosphere blending relaxed elegance with refined luxury. “Elegance doesn’t come from wearing high heels; on vacation, it’s about being sophisticated yet relaxed,” says Gathy. “It is this type of casual-chic atmosphere that I have tried to translate at Cheval Blanc Seychelles.”
Embracing the notion that elegance thrives not in rigid conformity but in the liberation of boundaries, Jean-Michel infuses casual-chic into the very essence of Cheval Blanc’s villas. They epitomise a harmonious blend of sculptural finesse and airy openness, characterized by expansive spaces, natural illumination, and lofty dimensions that foster a natural sense of ease. From the sculptural communal areas to the illusion of suspended ceilings created by sliding, baseless windows, Gathy’s design invites guests to unwind, and to be immersed in the tropical environment without forsaking sophistication—a defining feature of casual-chic living in the Seychelles.
The principle of casual chic is further accentuated in the colour scheme of Cheval Blanc Seychelles. Envisioned in shades of white, sand and greige, the refined villas blend harmoniously into this place where the optic white of the sand, the dark grey of the volcanic rocks and the deep green of the vegetation mingle. Rather than vying for attention against the captivating backdrop, the villas’ design ethos prioritizes refinement, comfort, and aesthetics, embodying a subtlety that complements the natural splendour of the surroundings.
Designing in Harmony with Nature
Gathy’s naturalist design ethos is prominently showcased here: the architecture engages in a harmonious interplay with its surroundings. Drawing inspiration from traditional Seychelles architecture, the villas feature high, sloping roofs and wide openings that invite natural ventilation and panoramic views. Gathy’s focus on erasing boundaries between interior and exterior enables guests to experience a seamless connection with the tropical surroundings and the authentic architectural elements of Seychelles.
The villas are characterized by generous floor areas and open-plan configurations. Gathy’s deliberate focus on incorporating numerous apertures and expansive, unobstructed views continues the design ethos of the property: establishing a harmonious connection between the constructed environment and the natural terrain. The villas are extensions of the surrounding landscape, prioritizing the circulation of air and natural light over artificial cooling and lighting. It is a methodology that integrates, fluidly, the indoor and outdoor realms, embodying naturalistic design principles.
Formal Purity Meets Immersive Luxury with Modernist Approach
Central to Gathy’s approach is his use of clean, geometric volumes and the minimalist expression of materials to craft the resort’s serene elegance. The Main Lodge, characterized by its soaring 8.5-metre ceilings, exemplifies his skill in creating immersive spaces that blend luxury and architectural purity. His modernist approach extends to the villas, where expansive living areas are designed to exude both grandeur and intimacy.
Under Gathy’s direction, natural texture and artificial materials are deliberately balanced: another distinctive feature of modernist design. Modern materials like fiberglass in artwork installations contrast with natural wood and the raw, tactile quality of stone, striking a balance between innovation and tradition.
Jean-Michel Gathy’s work at Cheval Blanc Seychelles creates a resort that embodies both refinement and the essence of the Seychelles’ natural beauty. His ability to weave together the sleekness of modernism with the organic rhythms of the landscape underscores his unique architectural vision. With each project, Gathy continues to push the boundaries of luxury hospitality design, proving why he remains a master architect sought after by the world’s leading hotel brands.
