1/ Austria
Year-round activities make this one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. In winter, look forward to the Christmas markets and fantastic skiing. Visit the former supplier to the imperial and royal court, Demel. This pastry shop and chocolaterie is famous for its fragrant candied violets and Sachertorte.
A time-honored tradition, Christmas markets date back to the Middle Ages, and have consistently evolved. Today, there are over 20 official advent markets, from mid-November to the end of the year. Get into the spirit at any one of these Christmas Markets: Christmas Market at Spittelberg to get your hands on objets d’art, ceramics, warm jumpers, rugs, and jewellery made of silver, enamel, and brass; Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace where freshly baked Vanillekipferl and hot punch fill the air; Christmas Village Belvedere Palace where festively decorated market stalls offer traditional handcrafted goods, elaborate Christmas decorations and special culinary delights; Viennese Dream Christmas Market, its location in front of the City Hall lends a unique backdrop, as do international choirs singing carols (free entrance on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays).
2/ Santa Barbara
If you have a New Year’s resolutions to incorporate more wellness into your life, Santa Barbara is your place. Think sweeping mountain ranges, California coastline, palm lined beaches and laid-back California fare. The Old Mission dates back to the late 18th century, and is a beautiful landmark for the city. Join in Mexican Holiday culture at Arlington Center for the Performing Arts with the festive music of Mariachi Sol de México to get you in the spirit.
3/ Maui
As a playground for families, the island of Maui feels like home from the moment you touch down and take in its turquoise shores. Escape the cold, and enjoy activities galore, from SUP paddling and surfing, kayaking or simply playing in the ocean. There are dozens of restaurants to choose from, and seafood lovers will love trying the mix of local flavours – from mix plate, to poke to earth oven flavours at a festive lūʻau.
4/ Quebec City
Idyllic as a winter destination, Quebec City sits on the famous Saint Lawrence River, and is magic during the holidays. Old Quebec, with its stone buildings and the narrow cobblestone streets of the Petit Champlain district evoke European charm. The iconic Fairmont Chateau Frontenac hotel is a must-watch-the-snow-falling spot all while you indulge in breakfast at this historic Canadian property. From November through February, festivities like the German Christmas Market, the legendary Bonhomme Carnaval (Québec Winter Carnival) and a visit to the Hôtel de Glace amaze visitors- you’ll forget all about the freezing temperatures.
